AB Series Pin Bush Couplings

AB Series Couplings for Smooth Operation

The AB series uses barrel-shaped rubber bushes, providing higher torsional damping, better vibration absorption, and greater angular and parallel misalignment capacity than the standard cylindrical bush type.

They are ideal for heavy-duty, impact, and reversing drives.

Refer to Table AB-01 — Combined Power & Dimension Data (for continuous duty at ambient temperature up to 50 °C).

Both designs ensure smooth, noiseless operation and long service life even under demanding operating conditions. They are simple in construction, easy to install, and require no lubrication, thereby ensuring maintenance-free service.

AB Series Pin Bush Couplings are designed for reliable power transmission with excellent flexibility and vibration absorption. Built with high-quality materials, they accommodate shaft misalignment while ensuring smooth, efficient, and long-lasting performance for industrial applications.

Features & Advantages

Performance Features & Benefits

Torsional Flexibility

The rubber bushes deform under load, reducing transmission of shock and torque fluctuations.

Vibration Damping

The flexible medium absorbs vibrations, reducing noise and extending equipment life.

Fail-Safe Operation:

Even under extreme overload or bush failure, metallic contact allows limited torque transmission to protect against total drive interruption.

No Lubrication Required:

Simplifies maintenance, prevents contamination, and ensures clean operation.

Misalignment Compensation

Capable of accommodating angular, parallel, and axial misalignments without imposing excessive reactionary forces on shafts or bearings.

Ease of Maintenance

Bushes are replaceable without disturbing the hubs or connected shafts.

High Misalignment Capacity

AP Series: Angular ±2°, Parallel ±2 mm
AB Series: Angular ±3°, Parallel ±3 mm

CED-Coated Hardware

Uniform coating ensures rust protection even in humid or outdoor environments.

What is an AB Series Pin Bush Coupling?

  • An AB series pin bush coupling is a dynamic power transmission component designed to be used to connect the driving shaft and driven shaft, depending on the application’s requirements. An “AB” coupling consists of barrel-shaped rubber bushes instead of the cylindrical bushes commonly used in standard couplings. As an AB Series pin bush coupling manufacturer, AniGears supplies these couplings for applications requiring stable torque transmission but also flexible operation.
  • The AB series coupling working principle by carrying torque between two coupling halves through steel pins with rubber bushes situated between them. When the shaft of the driving unit is turned, torque passes through the pins and the elastomer bush before it reaches the driven unit. This creates a flexible connection able to adapt to changing loads and protect other parts from excessive stress.
  • Unlike a cylindrical bush, the barrel bush coupling permits a larger degree of angular and parallel misalignment than a barrel bush. The barrel profile allows more uniform stress distribution over the elastomer, resulting in less concentrated loads and increased stability.
  • The flexible rubber layer also acts as a vibration and shock absorber. Its ability to absorb sudden changes in torque and impact loads helps to protect motors, gearboxes, pumps, and other rotating components without needing to be lubricated.
  • AniGears manufactures AB Series couplings from AB-105 through AB-2000 sizes, making them suitable for applications ranging from fractional-kW drives to large industrial power transmission systems. For additional flexible coupling solutions, explore our Flexible Pin Bush Couplings range.
Industries We Serve

Industries That Use AB Series Pin Bush Couplings

Which industries use AB Series couplings? The AB Series couplings are used where machinery is subject to vibration, shock loading, misalignment, and fluctuating torque. Their flexible design makes them the most common heavy-duty pin bush coupling solution for demanding industries.

Steel & Rolling Mills

AB Series couplings are specially designed to manage the extreme torque, frequent load changes, and high temperature swings. As a result, they help to compensate for the impact forces produced during the rolling process and ensure the safe transfer of torque between motors, gearboxes, or mill machinery.

Cement Plants

Cement plants employ abrasive and dusty environments where equipment reliability is of crucial, vital. For ball mills, rotary kilns, and material handling systems, the barrel bush design allows for flexibility and reliable performance with minimal maintenance.

Mining & Quarrying

Mining and quarrying industries place heavy demands on rotating equipment, and the motors of crushers, conveyors, and screening equipment face frequent start-ups and shifting loads. The coupling’s shock-absorbing and fail-safe features help increase system reliability in these environments.

Paper & Pulp Mills

Increasingly, high-speed rolls in paper and pulp processing machines are linked to vibrating equipment. The AB Series couplings have been specifically designed to minimise the movement of the drive train. As a result, the drive train is smoother, and the associated mechanical components are less stressed.

Sugar Mills

Sugar mills are subject to heavy seasonal loads, especially in cane crushing applications. Because of its ability to handle reversing drives and to transmit high torque efficiently, the AB-type pin bush coupling is well-suited to this environment.

Power Plants

Power plants depend on rotating parts such as cooling tower fans, pumps, and auxiliary drives. A coupling’s ability to compensate for shaft misalignment helps to decrease bearing loads, extend the life of equipment, and reduce unplanned downtime.

AB Series vs AP Series Pin Bush Couplings

  • AniGears makes the AB and AP Series pin bush couplings to meet various industrial requirements. The proper coupling will depend on the transmittance of torque, shaft alignment, shock loading, and frequency of load reversal.
  • Both AB vs AP Series coupling types are able to be flexible in their transfer of power, but due to bush geometry, they differ in their efficiency. Applications with vibration, fluctuating loads, shaft movement, or reversal will benefit from the flexibility provided by the AB series coupling. Industrial drives with steady torque should be satisfied with the AP Series couplings.
Parameter AB Series AP Series
Bush Shape Barrel (Oval) Cylindrical
Torsional Flexibility Higher Standard
Angular Misalignment Up to ±3° Up to ±2°
Parallel Misalignment Up to ±3 mm Up to ±2 mm
Heavy Duty / Impact Loads Excellent Good
Reversing Drives Better Suited Limited
Typical Application Mills, Crushers, Heavy Conveyors General Industrial Drives
  • The AB Type Pin Bush Coupling is recommended for shock- and vibration-laden applications as well as reverse-drives and more complex shaft misalignments. Its barrel-shaped bush provides enhanced flexibility and vibration absorption.
  • AP Series couplings are normally used in industrial drives used for standard continuous duty with relatively constant load distribution. If you need help choosing the right coupling for your application, please contact one of our engineers using the Contact Us link on our website.
FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

An AB Series Pin Bush Coupling (ABC) is a flexible coupling that transfers torque through steel pins and barrel-shaped elastomeric bushes to compensate for misalignment, vibration, and shock loads.

Pin bush couplings transfer power via steel pins securing rubber bushes. The bushes absorb vibration and shock and give the shaft more of a lock-up for improved power transfer.

AB Pin Bush Couplings have barrel-shaped bushes for greater flexibility and misalignment capability. AP Series Pin Bush Couplings have cylindrical bushes designed for use in standard industrial applications.

Barrel-shaped bushes distribute the load more evenly over the elastomer to create more angular and parallel movement, as well as less wear and vibration damping.

Depending on coupling size and operating conditions, AB Series couplings are typically able to accommodate an angular misalignment of up to 3°.

These couplings are used in steel plants, cement plants, mines, paper mills, sugar mills, and power plants.

The rubber bush does not need lubrication because the torque is absorbed by the elastomer and not through the metal.

Bushings should be inspected during maintenance and replaced if cracked, hardened, or deformed or if excessive wear is seen.

Yes. AniGears can provide custom bore and keyway configurations based upon specific shaft dimensions and applications.
